Living in Baden-Württemberg

Baden-Württemberg offers most beautiful landscapes. Would you like to go on vacation to the Black Forest?

The ‘Ländle’ is great

People who live in Baden-Württemberg can do everything – except speaking proper German. This slogan of a promotional campaign has become common. Not without good reason: Baden-Württemberg is leading the field, among others, with a low unemployment rate, most patent applications and 67 Michelin star-rated restaurants. The third biggest state is economically one of the most successful areas in Germany. The landscape of Baden-Württemberg is diverse. The Black Forest attracts visitors with a high feel-good factor. At Feldberg many winter sport enthusiasts enjoy spending time to go skiing or snowboarding. Lake Constance is the biggest German lake and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany all year round. In the ‘Ländle’ citizens enjoy a good quality of life. But compared to other German states, Baden-Württemberg has one of the highest living costs.

The state capital Stuttgart

Many people associate success stories with Stuttgart, like the one of Daimler, Porsche and Bosch. The Swabian metropolis is more than one of Europe’s strongest regions in economic terms. The city shows a high free-time value: many green places and vineyards in the center of the city, an attractive culture scene with about 80 festivals per year, big festivities like ‘Weindorf’ or ‘Cannstatter Wasen’, spas to relax and one of the largest pedestrian areas in Germany. In one of the 23 urban districts of Stuttgart it is hard to find an inexpensive flat. The most wanted objects are apartments at the slope with a view over the city. Because of Stuttgart’s location in a basin the city has two special means of transportation: A historic funicular railway and a modernised rack railway are part of the regular services. Pedestrians need to be quite fit: There are over 400 stairs – called ‘Stäffele’ – around the slopes of 30 kilometers length.

Other popular cities in Baden-Württemberg

Heidelberg

Many foreign visitors associate a typical German town with the city near the Neckar. This is because of its impressive cityscape: the Heidelberg castle and the beautiful old town. Nearly 12 Million tourists visit Heidelberg annually. The citizens like their hometown as well. According to the ‘Heidelberg-Studie’ 98% of the population is feeling very comfortable there – this is unique in Germany. Heidelberg is a city of science. The town is the home of the oldest university in Germany, many colleges and prestigious research institutes. People who live and work in Heidelberg discover way more than its romantic flair.

Konstanz

The biggest city on Lake Constance is situated on three different waters: on Obersee, on Überlinger See and on the river Seerhein. Citizens and tourists enjoy the privileged position of Constance, the charming port and the picturesque historic city. An internationally known destination is Mainau Island. Several million flowers blossom there. The Alps are located not far from Constance. For this reason many citizens of Constance like to stay at home for the holidays.

Tübingen

City of contrasts: a medieval city center meets a vibrant student style of life – this is Tübingen. The average age of the population is 40 years which makes Tübingen to one of the youngest cities in Germany. This is not the only special feature: the center of Baden-Württemberg is located in a grove in the city area. The botanic garden provides for relaxation. A very exciting annual event with up to 20.000 visitors is the ‘Stocherkahnrennen’ on the river Neckar.
