Overview:
The first documented mention of Eppstein Castle dates back to 1122. Its owners, the Lords of Eppstein, were also the ones who founded the town (first mentioned in 1299). Just under 20 years later, Alt-Eppstein was already granted town rights. Half of Eppstein was sold to the Hessian Landgrave in 1492, and the other half, including the towns of Bremthal, Ehlhalten, Niederjosbach, and Vockenhausen, became part of Kurmainz in 1581 after the Eppstein line died out in 1535. This division into two different areas of jurisdiction remained in place for several centuries until 1803, when all spiritual states in Germany were dissolved under French rule. From then on, the current Eppstein districts could develop in the same way again. After the end of French rule, they initially became part of the Duchy of Nassau and then in 1866, part of the Kingdom of Prussia. After the end of World War II in 1945, they became part of the state of Hesse within the Federal Republic of Germany.

In January 1951, the state of Hesse granted the town of Eppstein the right to use the title "city".
