Our project is growing! We just took over the Erdgeschoss, so we are currently looking for 2-3 more people to live with us.
We are a group of humans who stumbled upon the opportunity to build a community in Gräfenhainichen (50min from Leipzig). We live in an old villa (total of 275m²) with access to large attic and basement spaces, storage sheds/stables, and a sprawling garden (6.000 m²). There are two living rooms (with a cozy fire space) and two beautiful wintergarten. The rooms receive lots of natural light—overall the atmosphere is very peaceful and beautiful. Rent is about 400 each, that is including internet and all other nebenkosten. Not included is money we spend on renovation/furniture/larger appliances and food costs. If the cost is an issue, still feel free to reach out to us - we are interested in structuring our community based on solidarity. Some of us live full-time at the house and some split time between Berlin and Gräfenhainichen: we would prefer people who would be staying more full time.
We are interested in community building and doing life together with mutual care, respect, open and non-violent communication and lots of laughter 🙂
We value making time for one another, but we also celebrate individuality and having time for yourself. We share meal costs (roughly 6 euros per day), cooking together, and each taking over responsibilities around the home. (One of us runs the finances, one of us oversees the kitchen, one is focused more on the housemate search etc).
At the moment, 10 people are part of the community (5 of us live here full time) - we are 2 white cis women, one east asian diasporic cis woman, two white cis men, 1 white non binary person and 1 gender questoining person. Most of us are queer, some of us are neurodivergent. Diversity within our community is something we strive towards and talk about a lot. With each other, we speak both English and German (but languages spoken by us include french, spanish, mandarin, dutch, portuguese, turkish) and are in our mid twenties-mid thirties. There are also 2 sweet dogs, Iris and Pina who are very chill and easy with people/other dogs.
Beyond building a home and a place for retreat, we also do projects (some are more longer term and will happen in the future) —growing a garden, cutting and preparing wood from the forest for our oven, building a sauna, working on the house, and hosting artist residencies, etc. We have space to do whatever we want in the enormous garden, the basement will become a workshop, the attic might become an art studio/project space in the longterm (one of us is a visual artist). The lake for swimming is 5 minutes away by bike.
The people we are looking for:
1. Have space and energy for this kind of project in their lives, as well as capacity for relationships with those in the community. Also, have excitement for their own projects!
2. Are not a querdenker, queerphobic or a nazi.
3. Can imagine themselves living in a small town in east Germany. (though our town seems fairly open minded, it is overall not diverse and has experienced a great deal of trauma due to a large % of the population moving away after loss of jobs in the 90s. 25% of the town votes for the AFD, which is less than other parts of the state, but important to know.)
