Your room is the largest in the flat, a luxurious 25 m^2 with windows on two sides. Ideally, you would take it over fully furnished for a moderate fee. The furniture includes a double bed with mattresses (the bed can be closed to leave even more space!), an armchair, a fitted wardrobe, a desk, and an insane, gym-grade pullup bar! (The funny desk chair unfortunately doesn’t stay, sorry!) As a bonus, the paintwork in the room will be refreshed by the landlord before you move in!
The building dates back to 1860 and is part of the first building complex designed by Otto Wagner, the architect responsible for the characteristic look and feel of the city of Vienna. The flat has an area of 154 m^2 and is located on the ground floor (which gives it a pleasant chill in the summer). It consists of 7 independent rooms, a kitchen, a living room, two toilets, a bathroom, a separate shower, and storage areas. Since the teeth-washing sink, the shower and the two toilets are all separate, usually there’s no need to wait for your hygiene needs. Our kitchen includes a gas stove, a dishwasher, lots of space in the three fridges and any equipment desirable for everyday use (rice cooker, vegetable steamer, coffee grinder, juice press, pasta machine, etc.). Board and card games, a dart board, a projector/beamer, a record player with a collection of old jazz LPs, as well as a stock of more or less identified alcohols provide for a good chill or a movie night in our living room.
The flat is located in the ninth district, round the corner from the office of Sigmund Freud and from the house of Erwin Schoedinger. The ninth district adjoins the historical first district and
houses the main buildings of the University of Vienna and of the Medical University of Vienna. The streets surrounding the flat are normally very quiet, which allows you to leave the windows open and enjoy the sound of crickets during summer nights. Everything you need is within walking distance: cafes and restaurants, a river (Donaukanal), a small park with ducks (Liechtensteinpark), a supermarket (2 min. walk), as well as public transport. In particular, the tram D from Bauernfeldplatz (2 min. walk) takes you directly to the main train station or to the hills and vineyards just north of Vienna (seriously!). The U2 and U4 metro stations are located within 7 min. and 10 min. walk, respectively.
The life in the flat is maybe a bit chaotic, but more than makes up for it with cozyness. Small parties and get-togethers happen spontaneously, but we also like to plan larger “WG Abende” during which we cook and eat together (and then also sometimes dance to 90s trash or good techno). Weekend breakfasts are also notorious for lasting until midday at least. The frequency of joint evenings varies from daily during corona lockdowns (that’s when living with more people really shines!) to every few days or less during exam sessions and such. We do our best to follow a simple cleaning schedule, which keeps the situation under control most of the time ;)
We are:
- Tobi, from Germany, who studies social economy and works at the uni. He doubles the average shoe size in our cloakroom. DIscussions about politics, community, philosophy, and overcoming the structure are his specialties.
- Niko, from Germany/Croatia, is studying biology and is our star chef. He is always up for a beer, good music, playing basketball or flunkyball.
- Johanna, from Austria, who studies KSA and works as a social worker in a shared apartment for people with disabilities. She is up for pasta in any amount and at any time of day or night.
- Elias, from Germany, who studies architecture at the Technical University of Vienna. He is our local authority on good movies and he’s always up for a visit to a theatre or a cinema.
- Ariuna, from Germany, who writes her MSc thesis in KSA and works for the Viennese carter of Open House and at a chick Wurstelstand. She is always up for a good talk or any big adventures.
The additional costs (Nebenkosten) cover everything: internet (both WiFi and cable), electricity, water, gas and a contribution to the common pool, which we use for things like toilet paper, washing-up liquid, salt, etc.
