Hello,
My current roommate is moving out earlier than expected, so I’m looking for a new roommate to move in by August 1st, 2020 and until August of 2021.
I’ll start with a bit about myself; below, you’ll find some notes on what kind of person I’m looking for and then some general facts about the flat.
My name is Anna, I’m currently 19, a first year psychology student. I’ve lived in Berlin for all my life, but I’ve travelled a lot. I speak German and English fluently and a bit of Russian. Hobby wise, I enjoy doing photography and chilling with friends or my three guinea pigs (more on them later). I’m generally curious to discover new stuff, be it food or languages or hobbies or literally anything else, so if you message me, feel free to tell me some things about you!
I’m looking for a flat mate roughly my age (16-24 would be ideal), gender and origin is mostly irrelevant as long as you speak German or English.
The room is rather small but has been described as cozy. There are two windows but you can open only one of them; the second views the balcony (you can not enter it from your room unfortunately; more on that later). The room has basic furniture (a bed, a desk, a chair, a cupboard) that you're free to keep or replace at your own cost.
I also made up half the facts from the table below like "Energieausweis" because I have no idea about most of them. If it's important for you to know, message me and I'll try to find out.
I live in the middle of Berlin, in a calm but quite central district named Prenzlauer Berg right at the S-Station Greifswalder Straße. You can reach both the S-Bahn and the Tram in under five minutes of walking; the Tram closest to my house is the M4 and will take you to Alexanderplatz in about ten minutes. The S-Bahn is connected to the Ring and will take you to many bigger stations in under 15 minutes. In my opinion, the location of the house I live in couldn't be better as it's super easy to get around the city from there.
The flat I live in lies right above a Turkish café/bakery who make great breakfast.
There's an Edeka across the street and an Aldi (discounter) around the corner. You can reach both in five minutes by foot. If you walk for around 15 minutes or take the Tram for one stop, you will reach an organic food store, a post office, several drug stores and more grocery stores.
There's a big park and a library in ten minutes of walking distance.
Now, the following might sound a bit “strict” - I want to be real with you, because it’s gonna save both of us time, so I’m gonna put a few things out there quite clearly.
I’m not looking for a new best friend to hang out with every night, I value my alone time a lot and sometimes I don’t come home or leave my room for days. I know lots of people are looking for a flatmate to cook with every night, and if that’s your idea, I’m not your guy. I’m usually with people all day so it’s important to me that I have the option to just disappear into my room without hurting anyone’s feelings once I get home.
On the other hand, of course I’m happy to hang out and become friends if it works out naturally. If you’re from another city or country, I’ll happily show you around Berlin a bit when you first arrive here. However, what matters to me is that you’re fine with not seeing each other or talking to each other every day and generally are self sufficient and independent.
The second thing that I want to be clear about is that I’m looking for someone who genuinely takes responsibility in terms of cleaning the flat. I have lived with people I’ve basically had to babysit in the past and it’s not fun for either of us. I don’t want to have to tell you to do your dishes or clean the stove every time you eat, because that should be a given. I’m definitely not the tidiest person in the world and it’s totally fine if you don’t have the time to clean or wash something immediately after using it, but generally we should both try to use our common space in a way that doesn’t inhibit the other person. In terms of cleaning the flat, so far I’ve always made a deal that each of us would have to clean (vacuum, wipe the floors, clean the toilet etc.) every other week. These are details we can totally talk about later; however, if you message me, please be sure that this works for you as it’s extremely frustrating to find out after one month of living together that we have completely different ideas of the chores that need to be done. In short, I’m looking for someone who takes responsibility and doesn’t need to be told the trash is full or the toilet is dirty or whatever and can do stuff like that on their own. By the way, if you're still reading, please start your message with the sentence "frogs are cool" so that I know who's read all this and who hasn't. (You can also send a message in German, that's my native language).
All that being said - I’m a student and a teenager, and I’m definitely not super stuck-up about all this. I myself definitely take my time to do chores sometimes, and it’s fine if you do, too. We do both need to be completely honest with each other about these things though, so that conflicts can be avoided or solved quickly.
Some more things that might be interesting for you to know:
- I have three guinea pigs. They live on my balcony (unfortunately, it’s only accessible through my room) so if you don’t like rodents, you won’t have to do anything with them. They can be a bit loud at times though (if you don’t know what I mean, search up “Guinea Pigs Squeeking” on YouTube) and they don’t care what time of the day it is, so if you wake up easily, this might be an issue
- Generally, if you’re not a heavy sleeper, that might be an issue, as I don’t have much of a natural rhythm and will sometimes be up until or come home around up to seven in the morning, or get a snack or take a shower in the middle of the night. Of course, I won’t be playing loud music until late, but I can’t guarantee for much else
- As mentioned, there’s a balcony but it’s only connected to my room. Smoking (weed and cigarettes) isn’t allowed inside the flat at all, and while you can of course ask me to use my balcony, I don’t always want people in my room (and especially not when I’m gone) so if you smoke regularly, you’d have to leave the house entirely for that every time
- We have a bath tub, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a toaster and a microwave
- The flat gets quite hot in the summer. It’s bearable, but if you’re sensitive to heat, you should figure out a way to get an AC or fan into your room
- The flat is in the fifth floor; you can take the stairs there but we also have a very small (but safe) elevator
- I don’t follow any specific diet. I don’t mind if you do though and I’m curious to try new things; I don’t often buy meat, but I do eat dairy and eggs frequently so just know that it’s not a vegan household
- I separate trash and I expect you to do the same
